John Ternus Takes Over Apple With $58M Package

Talent Exodus Adds Pressure on Apple’s New Leader

Tim Cook has stepped down as Apple’s CEO after 15 years but will continue to earn nearly CEO‑level pay as executive chair.

Apple disclosed that Cook will receive a $2 million salary and an annual equity award valued at $45 million for fiscal 2027, half of which is performance‑based restricted stock units tied to Apple’s shareholder returns compared to other S&P 500 companies. The other half will vest over four years.

As CEO, Cook earned about $74 million annually in 2024 and 2025, including bonuses. His successor, John Ternus, will receive a $3 million salary and $55 million in restricted stock awards, with 75% tied to Apple’s performance.

Cook’s continued high compensation reflects his enduring influence at Apple, similar to Warren Buffett’s role at Berkshire Hathaway after stepping down as CEO. Under Cook’s leadership, Apple’s stock price surged nearly 2,300%, fueling massive shareholder gains.

Buffett himself credited Cook for multiplying Berkshire’s Apple investment from $35 billion to $185 billion.

Cook also cultivated strong ties with U.S. and Chinese leaders, helping Apple navigate geopolitical challenges. As Ternus faces hurdles like defining Apple’s AI strategy and retaining talent, Cook’s advisory role remains crucial.
