Malaysia must urgently confront its weak maintenance culture to prevent further infrastructure failures that endanger lives. Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye warned that deteriorating roads, drains, street lights, playgrounds, and public buildings reflect systemic neglect.

He stressed that maintenance should be proactive, not reactive, with regular inspections, safety audits, and accountability mechanisms. Lee urged authorities to adopt preventive systems, backed by dedicated funding and public reporting tools. 

He proposed annual audits, scorecards, and incentives for councils, arguing that a well‑maintained environment reflects a responsible society and safeguards public safety.
