KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 — Former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng has demanded accountability from the state government after drastic land tax revisions exposed systemic flaws.
Land Tax System
Lim highlighted cases where taxes surged thousands of times before being slashed by up to 90 per cent following intervention, including plots in Permatang Pauh, Bagan, Juru, and Simpang Empat. He argued such reductions proved the calculation system was defective and urgently needed replacement. Lim criticized Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow for defending Land and Mines Office officers despite repeated errors, insisting reforms must involve consultation with landowners and industry stakeholders.
