Malaysia Needs More Developers to Revive Abandoned Housing Projects

Malaysia’s housing sector needs greater involvement from established property developers to help revive stalled and abandoned residential projects, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said.

He called on experienced developers to act as “white knights” alongside government efforts to resolve troubled developments and help affected buyers obtain the homes they have paid for. 

Private Developers Urged to Help Rescue Troubled Housing Projects

Since the Housing and Local Government Ministry formed a specialised task force in late 2022, 1,647 distressed projects worth RM153 billion have been successfully revived, according to Nga.

Once completed, these projects are expected to benefit nearly 200,000 affected homebuyers. However, he said the remaining backlog requires private-sector expertise, financing and construction management.

Nga said developers could contribute by conducting structural audits, restructuring unviable business plans, securing financing and restoring confidence among buyers.

The ministry is also pursuing legal reforms covering developer licensing, project monitoring, strata management and residential tenancy.

He said preventing future abandoned projects is equally important, requiring cooperation between developers, financial institutions, professionals, local councils and the government to strengthen accountability and buyer protection.
