KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10— The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) recorded 27 cases of electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid car fires from 2023 to July this year, averaging 10 cases annually. Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu said EV fires remain a major challenge due to high firefighting risks. To enhance preparedness, JBPM has procured 318 fire blankets worth RM915,000 and received 30 more from the Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association (MyZEVA). The department is also studying new equipment, though water remains the primary cooling agent for controlling EV battery-related fires. —
