Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Malaysia’s digital economy must provide fair opportunities for local businesses, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). After chairing the National Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council meeting on October 21, Anwar said the government was reviewing ways to strengthen digital infrastructure, improve competitiveness and address practices that could disadvantage domestic traders. These include high platform commissions, restrictive contract terms and the control of consumer data by digital platforms.
Government Reviews Digital Competition Rules and Platform Practices
Anwar said the government would examine findings from the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) concerning competition within the digital economy. The review is intended to help identify barriers faced by local businesses and ensure digital platforms do not unfairly limit their ability to compete. The government is also looking at ways to reduce public-sector information and communications technology spending while improving digital infrastructure.
The prime minister emphasised that Malaysia’s digital transformation should attract investment and generate economic growth without leaving smaller businesses behind. Fairer competition could help domestic enterprises reach customers, manage operating costs and participate more effectively in online markets. The government also wants digital development to simplify everyday transactions for the public and ensure its benefits are distributed more widely. Budget 2027 includes measures aimed at strengthening MSMEs through improved financing access, lower costs and more efficient government services.
Anwar says Malaysia’s digital economy must protect local MSMEs from unfair platform practices while ensuring businesses have opportunities to grow.
