The Malaysian Bar has welcomed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s directive to review the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) but insists that mere amendments are insufficient. Instead, they call for the law’s full repeal, arguing that it grants excessive powers to law enforcement, undermining due process and fundamental rights. Key concerns include prolonged detention without judicial oversight and the denial of bail, which violate constitutional protections.
No to SOSMA
The Bar highlights that Malaysia already has sufficient laws to handle security threats without resorting to SOSMA.
“SOSMA has no place in our maturing democratic nation and is an affront to the principles of natural justice.” – Malaysian Bar
