Instacart cofounder Max Mullen believes a founder’s sneakers can reveal their true dedication. On the Uncapped with Jack Altman podcast, he explained that dirty, worn‑out shoes often signal “real builders” who spend every ounce of energy on their startups rather than appearances.

Seed Investor Mullen Spots Builders Through Worn Sneakers

Mullen, also a seed investor backing over 100 startups, said entrepreneurs with scuffed sneakers are usually the ones sleeping at the office and working nonstop. He cited his investment in Gumloop, where one founder’s sneakers were falling apart, prompting Mullen to buy him a new pair. For Mullen, grit outweighs polished aesthetics.
