MCMC Removes 56,294 Fraudulent Contents in 2024

From January to December 1, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) removed 56,294 fraudulent online contents. Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching noted an increase from 6,297 posts in 2023 and 242 in 2022.

Malaysia lost RM1.224 billion due to online fraud this year. Teo criticized Meta for allowing scammers to impersonate the AGC on Facebook. MCMC identified 274 such ads. Teo hopes the Communications and Multimedia (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Online Safety Bill 2024 will pass. She emphasized the need for better reporting systems and digital literacy to combat online harms.
