Melaka PRN: Will it be BNPN or BNPH or BNPHPN?

1 min read

SHAH ALAM, Aug 26, 2026 – Barisan Nasional (BN) is grappling with a strategic dilemma ahead of the Melaka state election, as its dominant position opens multiple pathways for cooperation. With 21 of 28 seats won in the 2021 polls, BN enters the contest from a position of strength, unlike Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN), which secured only two seats each.

BN now faces the choice of continuing its partnership with PH, exploring ties with PN, or adopting a flexible approach by maintaining tactical arrangements with both in selected constituencies. Analysts warn that such a “dual marriage” strategy carries risks, as PH and PN remain rivals nationally, potentially confusing voters and testing grassroots acceptance.

BN Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stressed that Melaka’s formula need not follow Johor or Negeri Sembilan, giving BN room to craft its own path. Choosing PH could strengthen the unity government narrative, while aligning with PN may consolidate Malay votes in key areas.

Professor Datuk Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi described BN’s position as that of a kingmaker, with the ability to shape outcomes beyond Melaka, influencing its trajectory toward the 16th General Election.
