Michigan Bank CEO Resigns After “Lake America” Photo Backlash

MICHIGAN, Sept 26, 2026, Jane Smith, chief executive of Family First Credit Union, has stepped down following backlash over a viral social media photo showing her family in sweatshirts reading “Lake America.” The slogan referenced President Donald Trump’s recent executive order renaming Lake Ontario amid a trade dispute with Canada.

Smith explained that the sweatshirts were never real, but digitally added using AI as a joke. “We weren’t trying to make a political statement,” she told local outlet WJRT, adding that the family had edited the photo before leaving for a trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Family First Credit Union announced her departure Wednesday, apologizing for “the concern, disappointment and pain” caused. Chief operations officer Jason Acosta was named interim CEO. Smith acknowledged the photo could be offensive, especially in Canada, and said she understood why people were upset.
