A Malaysian woman has shared her experience of allegedly being pressured by her employer to resign just one week before she was due to give birth.
The woman, identified as Suhaily on Threads, said she was made to sign a resignation letter shortly before her expected delivery date. She subsequently brought the matter to the Labour Department (JTK), where she said she was informed that she remained entitled to maternity benefits despite having resigned.
Woman Claims Employer Made Her Sign Resignation Letter While Pregnant
According to Suhaily, she met the relevant conditions after working for the company for more than 90 days and being more than 22 weeks pregnant.
She claimed the company subsequently blamed her for not “planning the pregnancy properly”.
Suhaily said a JTK officer rejected the company’s reasoning, questioning how an employee could be expected to avoid pregnancy and pointing out that this was her first child.
She thanked the officer for assisting her with the matter and encouraged other pregnant employees facing similar situations not to remain silent.
“My advice to pregnant women who are in the same situation as me is, don’t be afraid to speak up and don’t give up,” she said.
“Don’t feel guilty for standing up for your rights.”
Suhaily’s account has since attracted attention online, with many social media users expressing concern over the alleged treatment of pregnant employees in the workplace.
