KUNMING, Oct 2, 2026, A Chinese-Malaysian woman unexpectedly encountered her late grandfather’s photographs during a public exhibit in Yunnan province, sparking emotional reactions across China.
Known online as @Huiching, she shared a viral video mid-September showing her discovery of two images of her grandfather, Kuang Jinyuan, on Xinwen South Road. The clip garnered one million views in two days. “This is my grandpa. This is his name, and these are his words,” she said tearfully.
WWII Legacy
Kuang, born in Alor Setar in 1914, was among 3,200 overseas Chinese machinists who answered the call to aid China during World War II. At 25, he secretly left Malaysia to repair trucks, rescue vehicles, and recover military supplies along the Yunnan-Myanmar route. His diary recounts surviving an 18-hour siege in 1942 and trekking 24 days to Baoshan, losing two comrades. Over 1,000 volunteers perished in the effort.
Kuang returned to Malaysia in 1946 and passed away in 1993. His family only learned of his wartime service a decade ago when volunteers uncovered his diaries and relics.
Online users hailed Kuang’s sacrifice, with one remark
