MTUC Pushes RM3,100 Living Wage Proposal

The government will announce stricter measures in Budget 2027, to be tabled on October 9, aimed at ensuring graduates secure jobs that match their qualifications and receive fair wages. 

For many young Malaysians entering the workforce, this announcement offers a ray of hope after years of study, student loans, and jobs that often fail to reflect their skills or responsibilities.

Rent in Major Cities Near RM1,000 for Flats

Recently, the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) proposed a “living wage” of RM3,100 per month. While some employers may see this figure as high and burdensome, the reality of today’s cost of living paints a different picture. 

Rent for even modest flats in major cities like the Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor Bahru can approach RM1,000 monthly. That’s before factoring in food, transportation, utilities, and other daily expenses.

Merak Jalanan recalls a time when electricity bills were only RM30, compared to hundreds today. Costs have risen sharply, but wages have not kept pace. 

Thus, when the government speaks of fair pay and jobs aligned with qualifications, Malaysians hope it will be more than just numbers on paper. A truly fair wage means being able to pay rent, feed a family, cover bills, and still live with dignity and peace of mind.
