NAYPYITAW, March 16 — Myanmar’s Parliament convened for the first time since the 2021 military coup, with pro-junta lawmakers dominating the chamber. The majority of MPs belong to the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), while the armed forces hold a constitutionally guaranteed quarter of unelected seats. Proceedings began with the election of a Lower House chairman.
Junta Control
The 2020 election, won by Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, was annulled by the junta, sparking civil war. Analysts say the new MPs are largely military proxies, intended to legitimize junta rule. Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing is tipped to seek the presidency.
