Prominent businessman Ameer Ali Mydin criticized the government’s decision to impose the Sales and Service Tax (SST) on imported fruits, calling it illogical. He argues that basic fruits like apples, oranges, and bananas are essential for Malaysians, including low-income groups.

Mydin boss urges govt to exclude fresh fruits from SST

Netizens state that it is fine to tax exotic fruits like avocados and cherries. However, essential healthy fruits like apples and oranges should not be taxed as they too are possibly imported. Additionally, the talk of healthy food has been openly discussed among social media users on X. 

Another user speculates that cafeteria food for school children may increase in price in lieu of this. Nutritious food, especially for underprivileged children should be accessible to them.
