Ameer Ali Mydin, managing director of Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd, criticized the government’s decision to impose sales and service tax (SST) on imported fruits, labeling it “nonsensical.” He argued that apples, oranges, and bananas, often consumed by low-income (B40) groups, are essential and culturally significant, akin to “ikan rakyat.” Ameer noted that local fruit supply is insufficient, necessitating imports. Announced under Budget 2025 on October 18, 2024, by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the SST expansion has sparked concerns about rising living costs. Ameer urged the government to exempt these “fruits of the people” from SST.
