Speculation ran wild across Malaysian political circles on Wednesday following rumors that incarcerated former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was set to settle his RM50 million fine. Payment of the fine remains the vital prerequisite required to unlock a conditional royal pardon that would allow Najib to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest until August 2028.
The report sparked brief euphoria among UMNO loyalists anticipating “Bossku’s” transfer to his private Jalan Langgak Duta bungalow, while vocal critics reacted with intense backlash. The online uproar quickly turned its focus toward Transport Minister and DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke Siew Fook. Loke had previously pledged to resign from his Cabinet portfolio the moment Najib physically leaves Kajang Prison for home arrest. Social media users immediately began teasing Loke, questioning whether he was packing his desk.
A hoax?
However, the dramatic narrative abruptly reversed course. Lead defense counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah swiftly squashed the payment rumors, confirming he had received no instructions regarding any settlement. UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki similarly admitted the party’s “Solidarity Fund” fell far short of the required total. Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mohktar subsequently confirmed no fine was paid, leaving Najib in prison indefinitely.
The episode appeared to be a calculated “testing the pond” maneuver that triggered an abrupt U-turn. For now, the RM50 million payment rumor stands exposed as false, leaving both Najib’s house arrest and Anthony Loke’s pending resignation locked in political limbo.
