Najib to Serve Sentence Under House Arrest Alone

Former prime minister Najib Razak is expected to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest at his vacant Langgak Duta residence, following a conditional pardon granted earlier this month. 

Lawyer Hasnal Rezua Merican said the property was deemed suitable as no family members currently live there, allowing it to function as a detention site under strict Prisons Department supervision.

Najib’s Legal Team Considers Crowdfunding

Najib will be required to stay alone until August 23, 2028, with family visits restricted to designated days in line with prison rules. 

Access for lawyers may be more flexible, permitting visits multiple times a week or even daily if necessary. The Prisons Department could also regulate meals and restrict or prohibit the use of mobile phones, laptops, and social media.

Hasnal Rezua stressed that house arrest would not allow Najib to resume normal life, as the residence would effectively serve as his prison. 

He added that failure to pay the RM50 million fine stipulated in the pardon would mean Najib remains in Kajang Prison.

Najib’s legal team is exploring ways to raise funds, including seeking the release of frozen assets and considering crowdfunding. However, Hasnal noted that RM50 million is a substantial sum to collect through public donations alone.
