An outbreak of the lethal Nipah virus has emerged in Kerala, India, infecting five individuals, with two fatalities reported. Authorities in the affected Kozhikode district have established “containment zones” and temporarily closed schools. Additionally, 76 individuals who had contact with the infected are under close observation for potential symptoms of the virus.

This marks Kerala’s fourth such virus outbreak, the deadliest being in 2018, resulting in 18 laboratory-confirmed cases and 17 fatalities. Nipah virus is an RNA virus of the Paramyxoviridae family and was first identified during a 1998 outbreak in Malaysia, causing 265 cases and 105 deaths, with subsequent annual outbreaks primarily in Bangladesh, and sporadic cases in India, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines. More than half of those infected perish.
