On March 17, 2025, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) Act will be amended to include online media streaming, reflecting modern media consumption trends. Speaking at the Raya Sama-Sama programme, he noted that traditional film viewing is outdated, with most media now accessed via mobile devices. The Finas Act, enacted in 1981, governs Malaysia’s film industry, overseeing production, distribution, and development under Finas, a government agency. The proposed updates aim to align the act with the shift to digital platforms, ensuring relevance in today’s streaming-dominated landscape, Fahmi explained.
