Penang’s Indian Seats Still Secure Despite PH Setbacks

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 16 — Despite recent electoral setbacks for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, analysts believe DAP can retain two key seats in Penang with strong Indian voter bases. Independent analyst M Periasamy said Bagan Dalam and Perai remain safe for DAP, noting that Indian voters’ dissatisfaction stems more from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s handling of temple land disputes, matriculation quotas, and Mitra’s performance rather than with DAP itself.

Indian Seats

Perai, with 35.7% Indian voters, and Bagan Dalam, with 26.5%, have historically been regarded as “Indian seats” in Penang politics. Current assemblymen S Sundarajoo and Kumaran Krishan @ Calvin stressed that while support remains, reforms must accelerate to address education, economic opportunities, and community empowerment. Kumaran urged PH to deliver tangible results, warning that support should not be taken for granted. DAP Youth leaders echoed that dissatisfaction does not equate to lost trust in the party.
