KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2, 2026 – Following Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) loss of six seats in the Negeri Sembilan state election, observers say the coalition must look beyond blaming identity politics and confront its own weaknesses. Despite securing 11 seats, analysts note PH’s defeat was not solely due to Malay voter swings but also a shift among non-Malay voters toward Barisan Nasional (BN). This trend, they argue, reflects dissatisfaction among SME owners, middle-class professionals, and progressive Chinese voters, who feel burdened by policies such as the e-invoice system, SST, and subsidy cuts, says political analyst Liyana Marzuki on Facebook.
Economic Discontent
She points out that while Malaysia’s macroeconomic outlook appears strong, uneven distribution of benefits has left many frustrated. Economic grievances, she warns, can translate into electoral punishment, as seen previously with GST refund issues during BN’s tenure. She cautions PH against relying on racial narratives, urging immediate reforms to avoid being reduced to a one-term government.
