KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16, 2026: Veteran PKR leader Hassan Karim has expressed disappointment over Nurul Izzah Anwar’s decision to step away from the party leadership, arguing that leaders should face challenges rather than retreat during difficult times.
Speaking in an interview, Hassan said he had long regarded Nurul Izzah as a capable leader since her early involvement in the Reformasi movement and believed she had strong potential within PKR.
When asked about her decision to step aside following the party election, Hassan said supporters were left disappointed.
“I am disappointed. Leaders are born during crises, not by running away from them. In that test, she failed,” he said.

Despite his criticism, Hassan described Nurul Izzah as intelligent, capable and experienced, citing her electoral victories and parliamentary record.
Hassan also reflected on PKR’s leadership contest earlier this year, admitting he had supported Nurul Izzah’s bid for the deputy presidency against Rafizi Ramli. However, he now believes Rafizi should have remained in the position.
At the same time, he maintained that Rafizi still had leadership potential and revealed he previously advised him not to be overly critical of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Looking ahead to the next general election, Hassan said Anwar would likely remain PKR’s central figure and principal campaign leader.
