GEORGE TOWN, Oct 17 – The federal government plans to amend existing laws to impose tougher penalties on individuals involved in cable theft following recent incidents that disrupted public transportation services.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the Transport Ministry is working closely with the Home Ministry to draft amendments aimed at strengthening punishment for offenders.

He stressed that stricter laws must be complemented by preventive measures from operators, including installing CCTV cameras at strategic locations and increasing auxiliary police patrols in restricted areas.
The move follows a recent cable theft incident in Kuala Lumpur, where 100 metres of cable were cut near MRT tracks between Phileo Damansara and Pusat Bandar Damansara stations, disrupting rail operations. In a separate case, an attempted cable theft along the New Klang Valley Expressway was foiled by PLUS Malaysia personnel and police, leading to an arrest.
Loke said discussions on increasing prison terms and fines are ongoing, with details yet to be finalised.
