PETALING JAYA, Oct 20 — Former DAP stalwart and Urimai interim council chairman Prof P. Ramasamy has questioned DAP’s introduction of key performance indicators (KPIs) for future candidate selection, arguing that the party remains driven by ethnic and factional considerations.
Ramasamy claimed that despite projecting itself as a multiracial party, DAP is fundamentally a Chinese-based political organisation where top leadership positions are largely dominated by Chinese leaders aligned with influential factions.
He said the KPI initiative raises questions about fairness in candidate evaluation when non-Chinese members face limited opportunities to rise to the party’s highest ranks. According to him, positions such as secretary-general have effectively remained beyond the reach of Malay and Indian members.
Ethnic Power
Ramasamy also cited the recent Penang DAP leadership selection, claiming that a non-Chinese leader who secured the highest number of votes was overlooked for the state chairman’s post. Instead, he alleged, a Chinese leader was appointed to ensure that a candidate favoured by the dominant faction remained in line for the chief ministership.
He further argued that DAP’s multiracial image does not reflect its internal composition, noting that a large majority of party members are Chinese.
As such, he said KPIs would have limited meaning unless the party first addresses what he described as entrenched ethnic and factional dynamics.
