Loke Defends RM500 Traffic Fine Proposal Amid Opposition Pushback

1 min read

Transport Minister Anthony Loke defended his ministry’s proposal to raise traffic violation fines to RM500, countering claims it would burden lower‑income drivers. Speaking during debates on amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987, he clarified the RM500 figure is a maximum rate, with actual fines determined case‑by‑case based on severity and payment timing.

Loke stressed the policy aims to improve compliance, enhance road safety, digitise enforcement, and curb corruption, not to raise revenue. He highlighted dangerous offences such as reckless driving and illegal street racing as key targets. The Bill passed after several hours of parliamentary debate.
