The offence was said to have taken place in the early hours of April 1 in a room at the tahfiz centre in Kampung Patek Talang, Kadok. Abu Arsalnaa Zainal Abidin acted as the Deputy Public Prosecutor, while the accused was represented by lawyer Rozihan Othman. Abbas was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction. Despite holding a UNHCR card, Abbas was found to have entered the country illegally, and no bail was offered. The court refused bail, and the next mention of the case was scheduled for May 17, with a Rohingya interpreter to be appointed.
