Sabah activist Johan Ariffin Samad, part of the G25 group, criticized the concept of the “social contract” as a political tool misused to impose demands on non-Malays and East Malaysians, despite it originally having no relevance to Sabah and Sarawak. He explained that this unwritten agreement was specific to leaders in Peninsular Malaysia when the Federation of Malaya was formed. With Sabah and Sarawak joining Malaysia as equal partners, he argues they should not be bound by a “social contract” that leaves them disadvantaged. Instead, Johan suggests that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 should form the new foundation for equality.
