Sarawak Man Fined RM120,000 for Electricity Theft in Crypto Mining

MIRI, Sarawak – A 49-year-old man, Hii King Lee, has been fined RM120,000 for stealing electricity to power cryptocurrency mining operations at two locations in Sarawak. Hii pleaded guilty to offences committed at a commercial property in January 2024 and a residential premises in April 2025. Inspections by Sarawak Energy Berhad uncovered illegal direct tapping cables bypassing electricity meters, with 90 Bitcoin mining machines connected. Police also found illegal substances at his residence, and Hii faces separate drug and corruption charges. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ronald Felix Hardin warned of fire hazards from such setups. Another electricity theft charge remains pending.
