A Singapore man claiming poverty to avoid paying $2,200 monthly child support was rebuked by the High Court after evidence showed he had received nearly $60,000 in back pay and continued taking overseas holidays. Justice Kwek Mean Luck ruled that a parent cannot neglect financial duties to their children due to other bills or debts.

The man, a former IT professional earning up to $8,000 monthly, was ordered to repay $27,000 in arrears and resume regular payments. The court found his unemployment was self-inflicted despite his postgraduate qualifications. His ex-wife, earning $3,700, has been supporting their children alone.
