SINGAPORE, Sept 18: Singapore will require all newly registered motorcycles to be fitted with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) from April 1, 2027, making it the first ASEAN country to enforce such a rule, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced. Existing motorcycles without ABS will not need retrofitting, while the motor industry has been given an 18-month transition period to clear stocks and import ABS-equipped models.
Singapore first in ASEAN to require ABS on new motorcycles to boost road safety.
LTA said the regulation aims to improve road safety for motorcyclists, pillion riders and other users. Studies show ABS reduces fatal crash risk by 37%. The move comes amid rising concerns, with the Traffic Police reporting a 20.8% increase in fatal accidents involving motorcyclists in 2024 compared with the previous year.
An anti-lock braking system prevents wheels from locking up, enhancing stopping power and control to prevent skidding or sliding
