SINGAPORE – A 31-year-old woman was sentenced to nine months’ jail after pleading guilty to one charge of ill-treating a child. In 2022, CCTV footage showed her slapping her seven-year-old son, causing him to stumble and fall behind a sofa, then stepping on his leg and kicking his body while scolding him. The assault was reported to police by her husband in 2024.

Two other charges were considered during sentencing. The court rejected calls for probation or a fine, emphasising deterrence. Deputy Principal District Judge Kessler Soh stressed that parents cannot abuse children under the pretext of discipline. The woman, who cannot be named to protect her children’s identities, plans to appeal. She is raising her children alone amid ongoing divorce proceedings.
