Special visa for digital nomads gaining popularity

PETALING JAYA: Since its launch on October 1, 2022, Malaysia’s DE Rantau Nomad Pass has gained traction, with 3,315 applications and 1,563 approvals by June 30. The visa, aimed at digital nomads, allows extended stays and offers a legal framework for remote work. Approved applicants hail from 78 countries, including Russia, Pakistan, the UK, Japan, and Australia.

The visa’s appeal includes blending work with Malaysian culture and extended stay opportunities. It initially targeted tech professionals but now includes various fields with a minimum annual income of US$60,000. Digital nomads spend about US$2,000 monthly, benefiting Malaysia economically and culturally.
