Sri Lanka’s National People’s Power (NPP) coalition secured a historic victory in snap parliamentary elections, clinching a two-thirds majority with 159 seats. The people voted for one coalition mostly. Led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the left-leaning alliance capitalized on voter frustration over economic hardships and corruption, promising bold reforms to restore stability. The NPP’s dominance marked a dramatic shift, as its lead party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), previously held just three seats. Analysts had anticipated the coalition’s success but were surprised by the scale of the mandate. Nearly two-thirds of former MPs, including members of the Rajapaksa dynasty, did not contest the polls. But the win in Sri Lanka does not emulate the 100% success of the opposition in tiny Mauritius.
