The gunfire broke out after a football game, in a crowded area close to the university campus, according to police.
What Police Said About the Tallahassee Shooting
In a statement, the Tallahassee Police Department said at least three of those shot had suffered serious injuries, while the other nine were reported to be in stable condition.
Police said their preliminary investigation pointed to a fight that broke out shortly before shots were fired.
Speaking to reporters, Police Chief Lawrence Revell said the department’s thoughts were with the victims and their families. “It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured,” he said.
Police have not released the ages of the children who were hurt.
FAMU Alert Near Bragg Stadium
Local broadcaster WCTV reported that police were called to Perry Street and Manatee Street, citing a post by the police department on Facebook.
FAMU issued an alert on its own Facebook page about police activity near Bragg Stadium and Perry Street, telling people to avoid the area or to shelter in place if they were nearby.
The university later said on social media that the shooting took place near its campus and that the campus remained safe.
No Arrests Yet
Chief Revell told reporters that no one had been arrested. Police have not named or described any suspect, and they have not said how many people opened fire.
Police described their findings so far as preliminary, and the investigation is continuing.
