New: UEFA Stands Firm on World Cup Boycott Despite FIFA Retreat

1 min read

PARIS, Aug 7, 2026 – The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) reaffirmed its boycott of FIFA’s men’s and women’s World Cups, despite FIFA’s decision to withdraw plans to open the tournaments to private investment. UEFA said its member associations’ conditions for participation remain unmet. The body insisted that commercial rights of football’s premier competitions must never be sold and demanded binding assurances that such proposals will not resurface.

World Cup Boycott

The boycott stems from FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s controversial plan to sell up to 20% of World Cup commercial rights to private investors, including US venture capital firms. UEFA argued that treating the World Cup as an “investment product” would compromise the integrity of the sport. The move follows the 2026 World Cup, where European dominance was evident with Spain crowned champions. UEFA fears investor-driven pressures could distort future tournaments, undermining football’s traditions and competitive balance.
