Unity Government Faces New Test Ahead of GE16

1 min read

The upcoming DAP delegates’ vote on August 16 could reshape Malaysia’s political landscape. More than 4,200 delegates will decide whether the party remains in the Unity Government or withdraws from cabinet positions.

Political analyst Syaza Farhana Mohamad Shukri warned that if DAP exits, the move could be exploited by PN and BN as evidence that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has lost confidence from his coalition partners.

Opposition parties may then intensify calls for Parliament to be dissolved, paving the way for GE16.

Syaza noted that while Anwar’s legitimacy may not be directly challenged, the perception of instability could weaken reform efforts.

She added that DAP faces its own dilemma: staying risks alienating supporters who feel unheard, while leaving reduces influence in government.

Another analyst, Mazlan Ali, said the vote reflects DAP’s attempt to show responsibility after declining support in Sabah, Johor, and Negeri Sembilan.

He argued that even if DAP MPs continue backing Anwar, their absence from cabinet would signal division and leave Chinese voters without representation.

While the move could project an image of DAP rejecting power for principle, Mazlan cautioned that long‑term consequences may include weakened influence and perceptions of abandoning responsibility.
