Some unvaccinated individuals managed to beat the system and flew to Saudi Arabia for Umrah but they were caught red-handed upon their return because they were infected with the Omicron variant?

Based on a statement by Noor Hisham Abdullah on Twitter, as of 4 Jan 2022, 122 cases of VOC Omicron were confirmed with whole genomic sequencing. 71 (58%) were returnees from Saudi Arabia.

“We were informed 17 (14%) of the 122 cases were not vaccinated as required. A thorough investigation is ongoing now,” he says yesterday in the tweet, adding that based on Act 342, 1988 the maximum compound is only RM1,000.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin seems to confirm that 17 individuals were confirmed to be infected with the Omicron variant involving 10 citizens and seven non-citizens.
