KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary, Azman Abidin, refuted claims that the proposed Urban Renewal Act aims to displace Malays from urban areas. Instead, he said the Act would facilitate redevelopment while increasing affordable housing ownership for Malays. Developers will be required to construct more affordable units alongside free-market properties. The Act also proposes lowering the redevelopment consent threshold to expedite urban renewal efforts. Housing Minister Nga Kor Ming suggested reducing the requirement to 80% for buildings under 30 years old, 75% for older buildings, and 51% for unsafe or abandoned properties.
