An independent MP, Dr. Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tg Karang), raised concerns today over the Ministry of Defence’s plan to acquire used F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets from Kuwait. Zulkafperi argued that these older jets would struggle to match Singapore’s advanced F-35A fighters. During the 2025 Budget Bill debate, he questioned Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin’s justification for purchasing 35 used FA-18CD Hornet jets from Kuwait, given Singapore’s military upgrades. Zulkafperi, a former army captain, urged Malaysia to enhance its air defense system, proposing satellite monitoring, an air protection system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome, and an expanded fighter fleet.
