Vietnam has amended its nationality law to allow dual citizenship, aiming to attract skilled foreign workers and overseas Vietnamese. The reforms, passed last week, remove the requirement for nationality applicants to renounce foreign citizenship, and also scrap language proficiency and minimum residency conditions. This change is part of the country’s largest reform in nearly 40 years to boost economic growth, aiming for an 8% growth rate this year and double-digit growth in coming years to become a high-income nation by 2045. Leaders believe the move will accelerate technological development, particularly in AI and semiconductors, by attracting global science and tech talent.
