Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Zulkifli Hasan recently claimed workplace stress could be a factor in someone “becoming” LGBTQ+, sparking criticism and debate. 

Minister’s LGBTQ Workspace Stress Sparking Criticisms 

His parliamentary statement on Jan 26 closely resembled passages from a 2024 academic paper, raising questions of plagiarism and misrepresentation. Activists, including Justice For Sisters (JFS), accused the government of spreading misinformation to stigmatize LGBTQ+ communities. 

Clinical psychologist Shaleen Chrisanne warned such rhetoric pathologizes identities, reinforcing discrimination. JFS noted over 300 arrests in 2025 linked to sexual orientation or gender identity, alongside rising censorship and anti-LGBTQ+ campaigns exploiting religion, HIV, and morality narratives.
