Ex‑Lawyer San Markan Dies in Georgetown Office Fire

A fire at a law office on Lebuh King, Georgetown, claimed the lives of former prominent lawyer Datuk San Markan, 88, and clerk Chandra Binwani Jiwatram, 60. San Markan, who had recently celebrated his birthday, was found seated near a window at 1.05pm, while Chandra was discovered at 3.26pm beneath a pile of files near a wall.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said both victims likely died from smoke inhalation. The tragedy unfolded as San Markan was attending to legal matters. Investigations continue into the cause of the blaze.
