Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dismissed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s proposed “Malay secretariat committee” as a veiled attempt to revive a faltering political career. Speaking at the Bagan Datuk Umno division meeting, Zahid accused Mahathir of dividing Malays in the past, only to now push for unity after his party’s candidates lost deposits in recent elections. Zahid emphasized Umno’s commitment to the unity government, rejecting any movement rooted in personal ambition. Mahathir’s June 4 proposal aimed to restore Malay power but explicitly excluded inviting Umno as a party.
