Graham says Mark Zuckerberg taught him the importance of small talk: ‘He would just stare at you’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wasn’t always the polished speaker he is today. Y Combinator cofounder Paul Graham, speaking on The Social Radars podcast, described Zuckerberg’s early years around 2007 as socially awkward, often leaving long silences in conversations. Graham recalled that Zuckerberg would simply stare if he had nothing to say, which he found “surprisingly disconcerting.”

Venture capitalist Ron Conway had even warned Graham about the gaps in dialogue. Zuckerberg later admitted in a 2024 Threads post that awkwardness and negative feedback made him more scripted. Despite this, Y Combinator founders admired him for being relatable and in their age group.
