In December 2021, an American child died after emulating other users participating in the blackout challenge. Currently her family is suing TikTok for promoting it on her for you page as they feel it was what influenced her to do this.
However, social media users are quick to combat the family as parental supervision should be stronger, as you should know what your child is doing. Some people also complained that TikTok is quick to flag out other content but not dumb and dangerous challenges like this.
However, it is interesting how a 10 year old child is able to be on TikTok in the first place. If anyone cares to read TikTok’s community guidelines, it clearly states that the minimum age of joining the social media platform is 13 years old. This has been the main rule, even before this incident happened.
