Democrats enter the final stretch of the US midterm campaign with a 10-point advantage over Republicans nationwide in voters’ choices for their own congressional district, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.
The poll, taken October 15 to 18 among 1,206 registered voters, found that more than three-quarters of voters see the election as a chance to change things in Washington. Cost of living remains voters’ most important issue, and President Donald Trump’s approval rating reached a new low in the poll. About 13% of voters say they have already voted, and roughly half plan to vote on Election Day, with the rest planning to vote early or by mail.
Republicans respond with money and rallies
On Tuesday, Trump said he is spending more than $400 million to support Republican candidates in the midterms, UPI reported. He has been campaigning in battleground states, and Republicans, who hold a 53-47 Senate majority, are emphasising immigration, affordability and disaster recovery. Democrats need to flip four Senate seats to take control of the chamber.
Democrats – Voting and debates
Early voting continues to expand. West Virginia starts on October 21, and Delaware and Maryland on October 22, according to Newsweek, while Texas early voting runs through October 30. In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers held a second Senate debate on October 21 in a race that polls show as close. An early October Fox News poll had El-Sayed narrowly ahead, 50% to 49% among likely voters, according to the Election Tracker Live site.
Election Day is November 3.
