Just a few days ago, the Malaysian government announced their plans to enact a law that would require face mask importers to be ‘SIRIM’ certified. The government claims this is done due to our national security, as faulty/uncertified masks would give an increased risk to the public with the Covid-19 virus.

Netizens took to storm on social media saying that countries overseas are removing the mandate to wear a mask in public. However, the Malaysian government still insists on us to use a face mask in our endemic stage.

Netizens also mentioned that extra certifications on masks will not be cheap as businesses and importers would need to pay extra for them and it will trickle down to the cost of the mask. Another netizen jokingly said that we may also need Halal certification for our face masks in the future.
