The Ethical Finance ASEAN virtual summit (EF ASEAN 2023) was held on 30 March 2023, organised jointly by the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) and UK-based Global Ethical Finance Initiative (GEFI). This year’s theme, “Financing Transition,” centred around discussing how financial institutions can assist Southeast Asian economies in their journey towards achieving net zero.

AICB’s summit discussions

The summit attracted over 1,500 attendees from 90 countries worldwide, and the speakers included industry experts from leading financial and corporate institutions, policymakers, and academicians. The discussions covered several key topics, including the ASEAN Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, mobilising private capital for climate finance, the risks and opportunities associated with nature financing, the need for a just transition, and sustainable Islamic finance.

AICB Chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim highlighted the importance of continuing the conversation around transition financing and climate action in the region, given the ASEAN region’s significant investment needs for climate action. Global Ethical Finance Initiative Managing Director Omar Shaikh emphasised that ASEAN is a vital part of the global climate challenge, and it is essential to secure sustainable transition financing for its future.
